Laura Fitton, the founder of enough.co, leverages her background in environmental science and policy to promote climate solutions. Previously, she founded the Twitter app store oneforty, later sold to HubSpot, where she became an inbound marketing evangelist. Known for her role in popularizing Twitter's business and cultural uses, she's also the lead author of "Twitter for Dummies" and has spoken at prestigious venues and conferences on social media and tech innovation.
Laura, a renowned marketer in Boston, embraced my cookie project. I am eternally grateful for her support and I'll never forget the thoughtful box of HubSpot-colored fortune cookies that she sent to me.
The Love of Marketing.
Today's Marketing Cookie is about loving your work.
There's an old saying, "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life." Our job in marketing has proven to be extremely fulfilling for me. Every day, I find ways to match answers with questions, meet unmet needs, and provide solutions for problems. I take great pride in playing "matchmaker," and when the product or service I am marketing meets the consumer's needs, my love for marketing grows.
The truth is, there's no benefit in trying to sell something to someone who doesn't want or need it. There's no satisfaction in spamming, begging, tricking, or forcing people into making a purchase they will later regret. Such practices insult my sensibilities.
So, what does "marketing love" look like?
- That feeling when a customer finally discovers the product they desperately need is a feeling of love.
- That moment when a real person answers the customer service line and provides the right answer is a moment of love.
- That day when a company cared enough to send a thoughtful birthday gift is an entire day of love.
For me, that day was yesterday. That caring company was HubSpot. As a birthday surprise, the folks at HubSpot sent me a handwritten birthday card and a box full of custom fortune cookies. They were attentive enough to notice it was my birthday, and their gift of fortune cookies showed astonishing support for my daily Marketing Cookie blog.
How could I not tell everyone on Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook about this act of kindness? That is what "marketing love" looks like. How could I not show this box of cookies to everyone in my office and write about it the very next day? That is what "marketing love" feels like. How could I not include this photo of cookies in my presentations at various social media conferences I will speak at for the rest of this year? That is what today's fortune is talking about when it says, "This is your year for love. The love of marketing."
