Stay True.

Today’s Marketing Cookie is about finding your own path and focusing on what truly matters.

There is an ancient fable told by Aesop about a man and his young son who set out on a journey with their trusty donkey. As they began their trek along the dusty road, they encountered some townsfolk who scoffed, "How foolish you are to walk when you have a perfectly good donkey to ride!"

So, the boy rode the donkey, but soon they met travelers who frowned, "What a selfish boy! He rides while his poor old father walks." Embarrassed, the father took his son's place, only to be scolded by village elders, "How can you, a grown man, ride while your little boy walks? Have you no shame?"

Finally, both got on the donkey, thinking this would end the criticism. But as they approached the next village, they were met with angry glares, "How cruel! Both of you riding that poor donkey! You'll break its back!"

Desperate to please, the man and his son dismounted and walked alongside the donkey once again. They continued their journey in complete silence, burdened by the weight of trying and failing to satisfy everyone they met. By the end of the story, I suspect that the only one who was pleased was the donkey.

In your personal career, you will find that trying to please everyone—whether it's colleagues, clients, or supervisors—can lead to stress, burnout, and losing your sense of direction. Instead, focus on setting clear goals and priorities that align with your values and strengths. Seek feedback and be open to constructive criticism, but remember, you will never satisfy everyone's expectations, and that's perfectly okay.

The good news is, there is one person to whom you can always be true: yourself. By adhering to your own values and making thoughtful decisions that resonate with your personal and professional goals, you'll find more satisfaction and success in your career. Focus on what matters most to you, and you'll attract the right opportunities and people who appreciate your genuine self. After all, as today's fortune says, "It is impossible to please everybody. Please yourself first."
