Lucky Moments.
Luck. It’s a funny thing, isn’t it? Some people act like it’s a roll of the dice, completely random. Others feel like they’re just naturally lucky, always stumbling upon good things as if they’re living in a fairy tale. Others feel like they are naturally unlucky, just always stumbling. I’m grateful to say that I’ve been on the receiving end of some wild good luck myself.
On the night of my high school graduation, I fell asleep behind the wheel of my mother’s car, no seatbelt, hit a telephone pole at 45 miles per hour, and went through the windshield. But somehow walked away with just a small scrape on my forehead. There was the day when I wasn’t in the office, and a mass shooting tragically took seven of my coworkers. I think about them every day. And then there was the day I lost my job, but before I returned home with the bad news, a friend called to ask if I could rush to New York and help with the Lady Gaga and The Muppets television special.
I never noticed until reading back what I just wrote, but each of these “lucky” events that I automatically think of as fortunate are all connected with something tragic or bad. The good that shows up doesn’t erase the loss, and it certainly doesn’t make the difficult moments any less real. But it does bring a measure of relief and the motivation to keep moving forward and find new ways to make a difference in the world.
I’ve also had moments where hard work seemed to attract luck too, like when I started my first business. I announced it one morning, and by the end of the week, I had six clients lined up and a quarter of a million in sales. That kind of luck didn’t just drop out of nowhere. It followed years of building relationships, learning the industry, and recognizing an unmet need in the market.
I can’t deny that there’s a bit of randomness to when luck shows up, but I also believe luck can be invited. I once stopped to help a lady change a flat tire on the NY Throughway. I shared that I wanted to work in movies one day, and she later introduced me to a Hollywood producer who was working on a film with Tom Hanks. It’s moments like these that remind me luck doesn’t just come out of nowhere. Luck has a way of visiting those who are already moving and working toward something. The more effort you put into your goals, the stronger the pull, and luck seems to get drawn to you.
So, does that mean every hard worker gets lucky? No. Does putting in a lot of effort guarantee success? Not exactly. But when you are actively engaged in your pursuits, you open yourself up to more possibilities. The more you’re out there, lending a hand and connecting with others, the better your odds of earning your share of good luck.
Whether luck drops out of the sky to give you an unexpected boost, to ease the pain of something bad, or sneaks up on us after a lot of hard work, it always feels like a reward. It’s a nudge that tells us to keep going and remain open to what might come next, because, as today’s fortune says, “Fortune favors your luck in your endeavors.”
